Brake light cameras are a smart retrofit for vans and commercial vehicles, giving drivers a cleaner, safer rear view. They replace the factory brake light housing for an OEM-style fit, with no need to drill extra holes in the bodywork.
What You’ll Need:
- Vehicle-specific brake light camera
- 4-pin extension cable
- Compatible monitor or MDVR (e.g., mirror-mounted)
- Power feed (reverse or ignition)
- Basic tools: Screwdriver, trim tools, cable ties, multimeter
- Bonder or sealant (if required)

Installation Steps:
1. Remove the Factory Brake Light
Unscrew and disconnect the original brake light. Clean the surface to prepare for fitting the new camera unit.
2. Mount the New Brake Light Camera
Position the replacement brake light/camera unit in place. Most models are plug-and-play and align with the factory screw holes.
3. Route the Camera Cable
Feed the cable through the existing grommet and into the cabin. Follow the vehicle’s wiring path to hide the cable neatly.
4. Connect to Power
- Reverse Light Feed: For automatic activation when reversing
- Ignition Feed: For constant viewing
Use a multimeter to locate the correct wire, and crimp or solder the connection securely.
5. Connect to Display or DVR
Use the 4-pin or RCA connector to link the camera to your monitor or MDVR input.
6. Test and Finalise
Test the camera by shifting into reverse. Check the brake light function, camera image, and waterproof seals.

Tips from Daltec Technical Manager
- Ask your customer prior to install whether they want the monitor to display at all times whilst driving, or only as a reverse aid. This will help you identify whether to put it on ignition or on to a reverse feed only.
- Has the customer already got a MDVR or recording device capable of storing footage? If so then you may be able to add our brake light camera to their existing system
- Once installed, make sure that the camera itself has been adjusted to make sure you are using the camera to its full potential. It is very common for cameras to be installed facing the ground.
